Will these wrenches fit the pins on my instrument?

Obviously, if you are ordering your tuning wrench along with a bowed psaltery from Phantasy Psalteries, then these wrenches will undoubtedly fit. However, if you are buying a wrench for another instrument that you already own, please double check for compatibility by looking at the pictures below before placing an order.

My tuning wrenches are made to fit a standard 3/16" (5mm) diameter tuning pin:

Tuning Pin

A standard 3/16" diameter tuning pin, roughly the thickness of a pencil eraser

What it should* fit:

  • Hammered Dulcimers

  • Plucked and Bowed Psalteries

  • Zithers

  • Autoharps

  • Harpsichords

*I say "should" because I don't know for certain who made your instrument, or what materials they used.

What it will not fit: PIANOS. No, no, no. These wrenches will not fit piano tuning pins. (Besides, there are already many different tuning wrenches available for pianos.) In addition to pianos, these wrenches also won't fit most harps.

Take a look at your instrument, and see if the tuning pins on it match the approximate appearance of the pins pictured above. Only the top half of the pin should be visible, and the lower threaded part should be embedded into the body of the instrument. These standard 3/16" tuning pins have a tapered square top.
